This two-day summer school explores the growing role of electric vehicles (EVs) in modern energy systems, with particular attention to the opportunities and challenges arising from large-scale EV integration.

The program combines lectures, real-world perspectives from the electricity distribution sector, and hands-on optimization activities. Participants will learn how optimization can support decision-making for EV charging and flexibility and will work with an EV optimization model developed in collaboration with AIMMS to investigate alternative scenarios, perform sensitivity analyses, and explore possible model extensions.

Through the combination of energy-system perspectives, optimization fundamentals, and practical modelling experience, the summer school aims to bridge the gap between understanding the impacts of EV adoption and developing quantitative approaches for managing them.

Open Participation

The EIA Nordic Summer School 2027 is open to PhD candidates, researchers, and professionals from all universities and organizations worldwide who are interested in the digital transformation of energy systems.

Key Topics

01
Electric Vehicles in Smart Energy Systems

EV adoption trends and drivers, including technology development, user behavior, charging infrastructure, policy, and market penetration, together with the implications of increasing EV deployment for the wider energy system.

04
Hands-on EV Optimization and Scenario Analysis

Application of optimization through a hands-on EV charging case study developed in collaboration with AIMMS. Participants will work with an optimization model to explore charging decisions under different technical and operational conditions, perform sensitivity and scenario analyses, interpret optimization results, and investigate possible model extensions.

02
EV Integration, Grid Impacts and Flexibility

Impacts of EV charging on electricity demand and distribution networks, including peak loads, grid constraints, renewable energy integration, and the potential role of smart charging and demand-side flexibility. Real-world perspectives from a Nordic Distribution System Operator will connect these challenges with current industry practice.

03
Optimization for EV Charging and Energy Systems

Introduction to optimization concepts and their application to energy-system decision-making, including linear programming, mixed-integer linear programming, objective functions, decision variables, and constraints. Participants will also be introduced to AIMMS as a platform for developing and solving optimization models.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this summer school, participants will be able to:

Understand the Energy-System Implications of EV Adoption

Explain how increasing EV penetration affects electricity demand, distribution networks, renewable integration, and system flexibility, and identify key opportunities and challenges associated with EV charging.

Analyze Scenarios and Derive Decision-Relevant Insights

Perform sensitivity and scenario analyses, compare alternative assumptions and operating conditions, interpret optimization results, and communicate their implications for EV integration and energy-system decision-making.

Formulate EV-Related Decision Problems as Optimization Models

Translate an energy-system problem into an optimization framework by identifying the relevant decision maker, objective function, decision variables, parameters, and technical and operational constraints.

Apply Optimization Tools to EV Charging Problems

Use AIMMS to explore and solve an EV charging optimization problem, modify model assumptions and parameters, and evaluate the resulting charging schedules and system impacts.

ECTS Credits

This program offers 2 ECTS credits and is designed to enhance the academic and professional development of PhD researchers. Participants who actively engage in the program and successfully complete the group work will receive an official certificate of participation.

Prerequisites

  • A basic understanding of energy systems, electricity systems, or renewable energy integration.

  • An interest in electric vehicles, energy-system optimization, flexibility, or energy informatics.

  • Previous experience with mathematical optimization or AIMMS is not required. Familiarity with energy modeling, programming, or optimization concepts is an advantage but not necessarily a prerequisite.
