Getting to Tromsø

By Air

Tromsø is served by Tromsø Airport (TOS), located at Langnes, about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the city centre
  • Tromsø Airport (TOS)
The main gateway to the city. Direct international routes are limited, so most international travelers connect through Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL), with several daily flights onward to Tromsø.

  • Getting to the city centre / UiT campus:

    • Airport Express Bus: Runs between the airport and the city centre, taking about 15 minutes, with several stops and pick-up points around town.

    • City Bus: Routes 24, 40 and 42 connect the airport to the city centre; buses 20, 21 and 34 then connect the city centre to the UiT campus (main stop: Smørtorget, near Radisson Blu Hotel Tromsø). Tickets can be bought via the Svipper app, at a ticket machine, or by card on board (cash is not accepted).

    • Taxi: Taxi ranks are located outside the arrivals hall; the ride to the city centre or campus typically takes 10–15 minutes.

    • Car Rental: A good option for those planning to explore beyond Tromsø, such as the fjords or surrounding islands.

Getting Around Norway

Once in Tromsø, there are several ways to get around the city and explore the surrounding area:

  • Local Buses: The city bus network covers Tromsø and the wider region. Tickets can be purchased via the Svipper app or at bus stops.

  • Car Rental: A flexible option for travelers wanting to visit natural attractions such as fjords, mountains, and the Arctic wilderness beyond the city.

  • Group Tours: An eco-friendly alternative to driving, with many operators offering day trips and multi-day tours to explore Tromsø's dramatic Arctic landscapes while reducing your carbon footprint.

Sustainable Travel

Consider using the airport express bus or public transport instead of taxis to reduce your carbon footprint. If you plan to explore the region beyond Tromsø, opt for a fuel-efficient rental car or join a group tour to minimize environmental impact.

No matter how you arrive, traveling to Tromsø and the UiT campus is straightforward, with convenient transfer options ensuring a smooth start to your conference experience.
